Utopia

This was a team project where we had to turn a white-boxed level into a finished piece. We had to do so over the course of 3 blocks (around 20 weeks.) We chose to name our level "Utopia" and based is loosely around the movie "The Island"

Summary

Utopia is a level created in Unreal Development Kit 3. The level is loosely based around the movie "The Island" with an art nouveau twist to it.

My tasks included part of the asset creation and world building. Later I did some of the more advanced shader work.

TV Screen Material

Propaganda screens were an important part of our level, so we needed them to be convincing. Just having the different messages come up one after the other like slideshow would look really boring and unconvincing. So I decided to put more motion into the pictures without having to create movie files.

To do this I made one texture that has all the information needed to create this material. The red channel is used to create the ripple effect by offsetting the U coordinates. The green channel adds noise. The blue channel in combination with a panner node is used to create the scanlines. For an even more realistic effect I created an arrangement of red green and blue LEDs using the alpha channel and multiplied the flipbook texture with the result to split it into the different components. This detail will only be seen when looked at from up close.

Worldbuilding

For this project we had to turn a white-boxed level into a finished piece over the course of 20 weeks. I made the assets for the gym area and did a lot of the lighting and the more advanced materials.
